Hair Loss Causes

Hair loss is a problem that affects both men and women to different degrees and for different reasons. Although, hair is more of a luxury for most of us, hair loss can affect the self esteem of many people. The sight of bald patches or thinning hair can be demoralizing and depressing for many individuals.  Some people just don’t feel as confident when they begin to lose their hair, which is understandable.

Hair loss causes are vast and truly do vary from person to person. Some are natural causes while others are triggered by exposure to elements and diseases. Hair loss causes include the natural shedding of hair that everybody experiences every day of our lives.  You may not have known it, but some hair loss causes are normal and healthy!

For instance, hair shedding is part of our hair's growth cycle that happens around two to six years. Every strand of hair has a different growth cycle, which is why we shed some strands of hair daily when we bathe or brush our hair.  If this didn’t happen your hair would be very full and not very healthy looking.

Less Common Hair Loss Causes

Women who have just given birth can expect to see some hair loss in the three months after birth. Hair loss causes of this kind are due to the hormonal imbalance that happens to women who just gave birth.  This does not happen to every woman, but most women lose some amount of hair after the birth of their baby.

Issues with hormones are actually one of the main hair loss causes that happen to people. People who have hyperthyroidism also experience hair loss due to a hormonal imbalance and the same can be said for those who are going through menopause.

Unfortunately, exposure to chemicals, even ones that are given by your doctor is one of the hair loss causes that is widely know.  Hair loss can also be a post operative side effect. The follicles are not harmed in these procedures and hair grows back as soon as exposure is reduced or stopped.  In the case of chemotherapy, most people begin growing hair again within three months of stopping the cancer killing medication.

Other medications cause more permanent hair loss. For these kinds of hair loss causes, the follicles themselves are killed when the head obtained the injury and there is no way of growing them back.  Usually doctors will warn you about this before you begin taking the medication so you know what you are getting into.

Some hair loss causes that are natural occurrences include a genetic susceptibility to male pattern baldness or thinning hair. Another of the plethora of hair loss causes is frequent tying of the hair strands in a tight manner.

Did you know that repeatedly wearing your hair in a tight ponytail or style can stress and place pressure on the follicles and these will eventually die out or the hair will break. Dead follicles might grow again after some time of reducing the tying while perennial hair breakage can result in unhealthy looking hair.
