Hair Loss Dermatitis:
What is it?
You may have never considered this before, but your scalp is made up of hair and
skin. This
doesn’t concern most people, except when they learn that the skin on their scalp can become infected or affected
with skin diseases that can actually cause hair loss.
Hair loss may be the thinning of the
hair on our head or the actual loss of clumps of hair leaving patches of skin exposed. Losing hair in this
manner can be devastating emotionally as well as physically for those who suffer.
There are hundreds of different skin disorders that one can acquire, with many of them being
the type that will end up with hair loss dermatitis. Some of the more common
conditions that cause hair loss on the scalp area are psoriasis, ringworm, and sebbhoreic dermatitis. In some
cases, better personal hygiene can help to limit the exposure to these illnesses, thereby preventing the hair
loss dermatitis.
Sebbhoreic Dermatitis
If
you suffer from redness or scaling of the scalp you may have sebbhoreic dermatitis. A severe form or attack of
scalp dermatitis can lead to hair loss not necessarily because of the sebbhoreic dermatitis itself but may
actually be because of the itching, the scratching and the scaling that leads to hair
loss. Hair
loss dermatitis is a result of sebbhoreic dermatitis. Many people do not see the
hair loss, so there is no reason to believe that just because you have one form of dermatitis that you will
necessarily suffer from hair loss dermatitis.
Inflammation of the skin due to sebbhoreic dermatitis can also be the culprit in hair loss
dermatitis as well as traction alopecia. Traction alopecia is hair loss due to the constant rubbing and
scratching of the hair and scalp.
Many people just need to change their hairstyle and they will find that their hair
grows back better than they ever thought possible.
The problem with hair loss dermatitis is that it doesn’t just affect your scalp; it can also
affect your eyebrows. Some people find that their eyebrows begin to thin, or even large patches of their eyebrows
will fall out! This is often due to the flaking and the inflammation of the skin. As you can imagine, people who
suffer from this are often very upset and embarrassed.
If
you believe you have any form of dermatitis you should seek the council of your doctor immediately. The right
diagnosis is relevant to a quick treatment because there may be underlying conditions to what you think is hair
loss due to dermatitis. Some hair loss may need more serious treatment such as laser treatment and
transplants. Seeing your doctor and beginning treatment can often help to limit or do away with the
potential for hair loss.
