Hair Loss: The Common Causes

No one looks forward to hair loss, but it happens to the vast majority of the population.  While some hair loss is normal, you should be aware that a large amount of hair loss or sudden hair loss is something that should be paid close attention to.  When you are ill your body will use all of its resources fighting infection, and the result is that hair loss is often the result.  In addition, it’s important to realize that all hair loss is not the result of an infection or illness.

Androgenetic Alopecia

This is basically a term that refers to genetics.  You have genes that determine if you are going to go bald or not.  It is thought that your maternal grandfather is the one who gives you this gene, although this has not yet been proven 100%.

The bad news is that once you are bald, you are bald.  This type of hair loss, while not embraced by everyone, is completely normal and is not a sign that there is something wrong with you.

Scarring Alopecia

The term Alopecia sounds big and scary, but in fact it is just the medical term that is used to indicate hair loss. While androgenetic alopecia is determined by your genes and is normal, scarring alopecia is indication of an illness that causes inflammation.

Unfortunately, it is not known why some skin conditions trigger this inflammation.  With this form of Alopecia, your hair follicles become so inflamed that they can no longer maintain hair and some people will never grow the hair back after it has been lost due to the scarring.

Alopecia Areata

This form of hair loss is actually an auto immune disease.  While that sounds scary, it doesn’t have to be, although this type of hair loss will require that you are seen by a doctor.  There is not much known about this more rare form of hair loss, so a cause has not been indicated as of yet.

The thought among the medical community is that this form of hair loss is prevalent in some families, with hair falling out for no particular reason.  The great thing about this type of Alopecia is that the hair will usually grow back after a period of time.

Traction Alopecia

Traction Alopecia is perhaps the most common type of hair loss, and fortunately it can be prevented and treated.  The individual who suffers from this type of hair loss has had so many treatments to the hair and the hair literally just dies.  If you look at those who processed their hair in the 70’s and 80’s and never stopped, most of them are balding!
